Year 8 BBL Design movements task
A “design movement” is a style or usual feeling in art or design that supports a specific philosophy or ideal and is followed and promoted by a group of designers for a defined period of time. A design movement can help in the design of a new product or the upgrade of an existing product.
BBL Tasks
Term 1
- If you are designing a product or are choosing to base your product on a design movement or just looking for inspiration it is worth knowing the range of design movements inside out, understanding at least one key designer and the features (e.g. patterns, styles, colours, materials) that link products to that movement is very important at GCSE and A-Level.
- Research the following design movements and produce a timeline as to when they happened (you can do this online). Within your timeline you need to include the year, an image that represents the movement and the name of a key designer.
- Art Deco
- Arts and Crafts
- Art Nouveau
- Modernism
- Bauhaus
- Post Modernism
- De Stijl
- Memphis
- Below are some videos to help you with this.
- Once you have completed this upload your work to term 1, Year 8 BBL task on bournetolearn.com

Modernism
Term 2
- Over the next 5 terms you are going to design your own independent night light for your home.
- From your research in term 1, go online and research a night light that matches each of the design movements listed above.
- With each image, you will need to discuss how the night light links to the art movement (as an example of the type of movement).
- Click on this link to get you started with the some examples of lighting that links to design movements.
- If you Google the 'name of design movement' and 'design movement lighting' for each movement, you will see many examples to help you.
- Once you have completed this upload your work to term 2, Year 8 BBL task on bournetolearn.com
Term 3
- Communication of design idea
- When designing products in engineering, the design ideas are communicated to stakeholders with detailed drawings, before moving onto a CAD design (Computer Aided Design).
- There are many different methods of producing design ideas, here are some examples:
- Isometric
- Oblique
- One point perspective
- Two point perspective
- Orthographic
- Exploded view
- Assembly drawings
- Systems diagrams
- Do some online research and look at all the different design methods listed above.
- Decide which one you like the most and design your night light project on paper in your chosen method. You can find many tutorials online which will help you with these designs.
- For example, below is a video of how to do an Isometric drawing:
- Once you have completed you design on paper, take a picture of it and upload it to the year 8, term 3 BBL task on bournetolearn.com
Term 4
- Oracy task.
- Now that you have completed you night light design, you will need to get feedback about your design idea. This is called 'stakeholder feedback'.
- You will need to show at least 2 other people you design idea from term 3. Ask them the following questions and record their answers:
- What are the features that they like about your design?
- What design movement do they think about your choice of design movement/movements?
- What features do they not like about your design and how do they think it could be improved?
- What materials do they think would be best suited for the design idea?
- Once you have completed this upload your work to term 4, Year 8 BBL task on bournetolearn.com
Term 5
- Many of the projects are made from acrylic (sometimes referred to as Perspex, which is a brand name).
- This is a non-renewable product derived from the petroleum or coal-based chemicals and synthesized to acrylic resin pellets.
- There are many other materials that could be used to make the projects which are more sustainable.
- As acrylic is not a renewable resource, do some research into three different renewable/recyclable materials that we could be use to replace the housing material for the above night light project.
- Write down three advantages and three disadvantages of using these 3 materials.
- Include pictures of the materials.
- Once you have completed this upload your work to term 5, Year 8 BBL task on bournetolearn.com
