Year 8 BBL Design movements task

A “design movement” is a style or usual feeling in art or design that supports a specific philosophy or ideal and is followed and promoted by a group of designers for a defined period of time. A design movement can help in the design of a new product or the upgrade of an existing product.

BBL Tasks

Term 1

  • If you are designing a product or are choosing to base your product on a design movement or just looking for inspiration it is worth knowing the range of design movements inside out, understanding at least one key designer and the features (e.g. patterns, styles, colours, materials) that link products to that movement is very important at GCSE and A-Level.
  • Research the following design movements and produce a timeline as to when they happened (you can do this online). Within your timeline you need to include the year, an image that represents the movement and the name of a key designer.

    • Arts and Crafts
    • Art Nouveau
    • Modernism
    • Bauhaus
    • Post Modernism

  • With each image, you will need to discuss how the night light links to the art movement (is an example of the type of movement).
  • Click on this link to get you started with the some examples of lighting thank links to design movements.
  • If you Google the 'name of design movement' and 'design movement lighting' for each movement, you will see many examples to help you.
  • Once you have completed this upload your work to bournetolearn.com

Term 3

  • Having looked at all of the design movements above, you are now going to design your own night light.
  • Think about all of the designs you have looked at, which one (or combination of them) would best suit you and your household.
  • Once you have decided, on paper, using a ruler and pencil, design you own night light project.
  • When completed, you will need to explain how you decided on this design and which design movement/s influenced you in this design.
  • Take a picture of your completed work and upload it to bournetolearn.com
  • Keep your design as you will need to use it in next term's task.

    • What are the features that they like about your design?
